A message from Sharon
When I accepted the position as president of the board of the NY Aikikai, I knew there would be challenges; adjusting to the loss of Yamada Sensei, Steve’s new role as chief instructor, and the daunting fundraising goals for the renovation of our building. Not to mention looking ahead at the renovation itself!
After the Capital Campaign Kickoff party, a lot of my concerns have been laid to rest. I am touched and heartened by the camaraderie and generosity of our members.
Every step of the way over the last many months, I love how we all came together to mourn, to train hard, to carry on. Preparing for our kickoff party, a group of us solicited pledges. There was a committee who organized and set up the party, which culminated in a joyous event whose success is still resonating throughout the dojo.
I am even more moved by the students who arrived the next day after a night of revelry to clean the dojo, painstakingly, even getting on ladders and dusting the fans, making our school a healthy place to practice. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
We are getting close to our primary goal. What felt impossible seems to be within reach. So many thank yous to go around. To the talented event organizers headed by Michael Feigin along with Debra Crampton, Gina Zarrilli, Aleksey Nuzhnov, DJ Spencer Sweeney and David Reinfeld. Loudon Wainwright III, of course, was the ultimate highlight.
Special thanks to Joan Ellis and Mieke Vandersall; the co-chairs of the Capital Campaign are impeccable. I am in awe of them as well as the staff of Vandersall Collective.
A final note of gratitude is saved for Steve Sensei who has taken on his role with aplomb. We are in good shape under his guidance. The road ahead is exciting and I am honored to be part of it.
The dojo means so much to so many people, past and present. Let’s cross the finish line together! If you haven’t already, lease pledge or donate. All gifts of all sizes matter.
See you on the mat!
